October 29-30, 2021; Christ the King Retreat Center. (Not an overnight retreat).
We’re only days away… and space is filling up very quickly! As of 10/18, we have about 17 spots left.
Note to those already registered: As of 10/15, and depending upon when you registered, you should have received at least one email (and probably two) from us about the retreat. If you didn’t, it’s possible that we don’t have your email address (or you may want to check your junk email folder). We are particularly looking for emails from the following registrants: J.J., J.S., P.S., G.M., and T.B. Please contact Pastor Chris if you haven’t heard from us.
Best-selling author of The Benedict Option: A Strategy for Christians in a Post-Christian Nation, and Live Not by Lies: A Manual for Christian Dissidents, Rod Dreher will be on hand for a special, and ultimately hopeful and encouraging, two-day mini retreat to give insights on how Christians can live in a post-Christian nation.
Pastor Chris writes, “We’re so very pleased to share the terrific news of this retreat with you. Dreher’s books, The Benedict Option and Live Not By Lies, surely had a big impact on our ministry in the last year. And, speaking of 2020, I am ever more convinced that Rod’s prophetic works are important, if not essential, guides for how Christians can move forward in odd times like these. In my view, the books are some of the most helpful Christian resources of our day.”
The Benedict Option, from 2017, is the New York Times bestseller that sparked an international debate about the future of Christianity. Live Not by Lies, his work from last year, shot to number 1 on the Amazon list shortly after its release.
In the first work, Dreher closely examined the life and work of St. Benedict– worthy of a retreat all by itself– and followed it up in the second with a deeply personal work of interviews with European former Christian dissidents. His unique expertise and scholarship in this area make Dreher’s visit to Sacramento a unique opportunity that you should not miss.
What are Christians to do in a post-Christian culture, and how do we dissent from soft totalitarianism? Our Christian past, and our brothers and sisters who have been through much worse, hold the keys. Join us!
The retreat cost is $40 per person, which includes lunch on Saturday.
The overall, general schedule looks like this: Friday: 6:30 PM (gather); 7-9 PM; Saturday: 8:30 AM (gather); 9-noon, lunch, 1-4ish PM. Please note: This is not an overnight retreat.
The event will not be livestreamed, though we may record it for later posting.
What to bring? There are some lovely outdoor spaces at the Center, and if the weather is nice, you have the option of eating lunch outside. We recommend that you dress in layers for changing temps. You’ll likely want to bring your Bible and a notebook/pen—something hard to write on (we will not be at tables). You may also want to bring a cushion.
We encourage you to find parking and make your way to the Quinn Room well before start time to meet folks and get settled.
There are THREE ways to pay: 1) Use our secure, online giving portal. Please: Make sure to write “Fall Retreat” in the notes and tell us who the reservations are for. Also, when using this option, please add $2 per reservation to offset electronic transmission fees. Here’s your link: Electronic Payment Portal. Don’t forget to click “SUBMIT” at the bottom of the payment page.
2) Send a check in the mail (BUT take note: As we get closer to the retreat, the time for mail delivery/pickup/processing may delay your reservation. We’re operating on a first-come, first-served basis). Please: Make sure to write “Fall Retreat” in the notes and tell us who the reservations are for (please include email). Epiclesis; 11230 Gold Express Drive, #310-214; Gold River, CA 95670-4484.

Pre-Retreat Gathering and Conversation…
Please take note: We’re going to host a Pre-Retreat Gathering and Conversation on Sunday night, October 24, at 6 PM, at the Carmichael Chapel (4600 Winding Way). We’ll make time for food and fellowship, but the main focus of the evening will be to prepare for the retreat. We’ll be looking at broad themes and ideas that Rod will be touching on, and we’ll have some material to work through he helped us prepare. Along the way, there’ll be opportunities for conversations at tables.
Let us know if you’re coming (we’d like to get an idea of numbers for food). One way you might want to prepare (though it’s not a prerequisite): Skim through George Orwell’s 1984 and Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World— at least the broad themes and main ideas. We’re going to do some comparing and contrasting, and there’ll be opportunities for conversation at tables. This session is not a prerequisite for the retreat, but we’re certain it’ll be a great way to prepare as you meet other retreatants, ponder some helpful ideas, and pray for the upcoming weekend. The session will be livestreamed to Zoom and to the Epiclesis Facebook page. Find connection details here.
