Why do many Christians zero in on Christ’s birth, death, and resurrection, along with his final return, while his ascension and its significance is greatly underestimated or misunderstood? For many of us, the ascension of Christ was simply not emphasized or valued in our biblical training– it was, for many, a kind of quaint footnote to Jesus’ life and ministry on earth.
But Jesus’ ascension is central to the faith, and Christians would do well to explore its rich theological implications.
At this year’s retreat, we will explore the ascension of Christ, the seating with Christ, and the Lordship of Christ. Our aim will be to highlight and underscore the significance of these aspects of Christ’s ascension, thereby probing and deepening our relationship with the triune God.
Our fall retreat is set for October 13-14, 2017! And we’re back at the beautiful Christ the King Retreat Center in Citrus Heights.
Also keep this in mind: This retreat (not an overnight event) is open to the Sacramento Christian community– not just Epiclesis members– so it’s a perfect opportunity to invite friends and co-workers. Childcare is available. (Some people may want to explore enhancing/extending their retreat by a day or so and stay on site. Rooms are available subject to the Center’s schedule and will require an additional fee. Please email Pastor Chris about this possibility).
Schedule: There will be a single session on Friday night (from 7-9 PM), a session on Saturday morning (9 AM), lunch together at the Center, then an afternoon session (concluding at about 4 PM). Dr. Van Marion will also teach at Epiclesis on Sunday morning following the retreat. Find a handy map to the Retreat Center here.
Costs? The cost per person is $35 (helps to cover the use of the facility and lunch on Saturday). We don’t want cost to keep anyone from coming (and we do have a scholarship or two still available).
You may pay by check made payable to Epiclesis and marked “Fall Retreat.” Bring a check to church on Sundays, or mail it to our P.O. Box. You may also use our handy, online giving page. Please note: If you use the online giving page, kindly add $3.00 to offset electronic fees.
Said Pastor Chris, “We strive continually to bring academic, theological, and pastoral luminaries to Sacramento for our annual retreats. This year, with Dr. Van Marion, is no exception and I am enormously proud (and humbled) that someone of his considerable gifts is coming our way. This retreat– and Dr. Van Marion’s teaching and presence– is a tremendous opportunity and folks should not miss it!”
A gifted teacher and pastor, Dr. Jack Van Marion is a founding faculty member of the Robert E. Webber Institute for Worship Studies. Now in his 20th year there, he teaches The Christian Year. He received a B.A. from Calvin College, an M.Div. from Calvin Theological Seminary, and a D.Min. in Worship Studies from Northern Seminary. As an ordained pastor, he has served churches in Hudsonville, MI, Des Moines, IA, and Beamsville, Ontario, Canada.
He is Pastor Emeritus of Calvary Christian Reformed Church in Edina, MN. Jack combines his worship and ministry experience in the pastorate with teaching opportunities, and a favorite among students at IWS, he supervises doctoral candidates as they develop their thesis projects.
